“Then said Boaz unto Ruth, Hearest thou not, my daughter? Go not to glean in another field, neither go from hence, but abide here fast by my maidens.” Ruth 2:8
Ruth was a Moabite, a Gentile, a foreigner in Israel. She was a young widow. She was poor. She went to this field to glean behind the reapers of the harvest and God directed her to the field of rich, mighty, generous Boaz. The above words were part of Boaz’s guarantee to Ruth of safety and provision in his fields. But notice his words, “Go not to glean in another field…”
All that we as poor, foreign Gentiles need is found in our Boaz, the rich, mighty, generous Jesus Christ. In His field, there is plenty of provision for the soul. There is safety from sinful traps and destruction. There is gracious promise after promise. But He also says to us, “Go not to glean in another field…”
Someone reading this today may be attracted, tempted strongly by “other fields.” Maybe it is the field of “freedom” that really is just worldly bondage. Perhaps it is a secret, sinful pleasure that makes big, bold promises. Maybe it is so-called enlightenment. You’ve “arrived” philosophically or academically and think that the Gospel is quite flawed after all. Remember Christ’s word to you, “Go not to glean in another field…”
Ruth would have been foolish to ignore Boaz’s words and start looking for other places to glean. We are even more foolish if we do so. Abide today, tomorrow, and the rest of your life in the glorious fields of Christ!
