“Lord, make me to know
mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I
am. Behold, thou hast made my life as an handbreadth; and mine age is as
nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity.
Selah.” Psalm 39:4,5
It is needful for us to be
reminded frequently of the shortness and uncertainty of our lives. It is good
for us to know how “frail” we are, as David said, and how that compared with
God our lives are quite small. It is good for us for several reasons:
1.
It
is humbling—it reminds us we’re not as big and powerful as we sometimes think
we are. It reminds us of our weakness and our constant dependence upon God.
2.
It
refocuses our attention—it is easy for us to get the center and focus of our
lives distracted. The shortness and fragility of our lives reminds us to keep the
main thing the main thing in our lives. The main thing of course, is loving,
serving, and honoring our great Savior.
3.
It
reminds us of how big God is—He is not frail. His lifespan is not short. He can’t
die in a car wreck, contract cancer, or get laid off His job. Thus, we are
pointed back to Him, our trust, our confidence, our refuge.
You can’t do yesterday over
again. Tomorrow can’t be lived yet. You have today. Remember, a Godly
life is made up of Godly days.
