“And every one that was in distress, and every one that
was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him;
and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred
men.” I Samuel 22:2
David was the one these peoples were rallying around. He
was running from Saul’s mad and murderous jealousy. These other people were
also in trouble and they came to David.
We also have a David to rally around. We, whose sins
make us indebted to God. We, who are in distress over various circumstances.
We, who are discontented with our sins and weakness and the darkness of this
world. Our David is Jesus Christ!
Take your debts to Him, of whom we sing, “Jesus paid it
all!” Carry your distress to Him, who has your times (good and bad) in His
hands. And yes, the discontented soul, run to Him, knowing that He can work in
you both to will and to do of His good pleasure. And may we, like they, be
willing to sit under Him as our Captain, obeying His word and doing His will.
